AC Cobra
The reputation of the AC Cobra needs no introduction. With wins in all manor of races both in period and in the present day the car has developed a following many can only dream of. This unique position has led to the AC Cobra being one of the most replicated cars on the planet. Here at IK Sport Classic we were asked to get involved in one such replica build and jumped at the chance.
As a weekend project the owner had done an amazing job of the mechanical build of the car but was looking for a professional setup to complete the paintwork. That’s where we stepped in.
After transporting the car back to our HQ we set to work blocking back the fibreglass gel coat and applying filler where required to get the finished surface as flat as possible. While fibreglass has many unique qualities including lightness, it often suffers from an uneven painted finish. In order to get the car up to our high standards the finish would need to match that of a metal built car which requires many additional hours of sanding and preparation work. Once we were happy the filler work had been completed the car was given a complete coat of spray filler. This allowed us to sand away even the smallest of imperfections before the car went into final colour.
Before applying the colour it was important to adjust the panel gaps between the doors, bonnet and boot lid. This involved sanding between the panels to ensure a constant gap across each aperture. It was then time to apply the colour and begin work on painting the stripes.
The stripes were marked using fine tape and inspected by the customer prior to painting. Some minor adjustments were made to bring the end of each strip to a neat finish before painting in Silver and contrasting Lamborghini Green to match the brake callipers.
After the clear coat had been sanded and polished to a glass-like finish the car was transported back to owner for him to complete the build and get the car on the road.
